Ingredients
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 ounce red food coloring
- 2 teaspoon cocoa
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 1/4 c. flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 3 T flour
- 1 c. lowfat milk
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 c. butter
Directions
- Cream shortening, sugar and large eggs. Make a paste of coloring and cocoa. Add in to mix. Add in buttermilk, alternately with flour and salt. Add in vanilla. Add in soda to vinegar, holding over bowl as it foams; add in to mix by blending, not beating. Bake for 25 to 30 min at 350 degrees in 3 (8 inch) greased and lightly floured pans (or possibly 2 layers and split in half).FROSTING: Cook flour and lowfat milk till thick (over dough-boiler, stirring constantly - may use mixer to smooth). Refrigerate in refrigerator. Cream sugar, butter and vanilla till fluffy. Add in to first mix after 25 plus min. Mix till well blended.
