  • 1 c. soft shortening (half butter)
  • 1 c. sifted confectioners' sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1/4 c. finely crushed peppermint stick candy, if you like
  • 1/4 c. sugar, if you like

Directions

  1. Mix shortening, sugar, egg, flavorings. Mix flour and salt; blend in thoroughly. Divide dough in half. Blend red food coloring into one half. Refrigeratedough till hard.
  2. On lightly floured cloth-covered board, roll light half into a 12-inch square. Roll red half same size and lay on top of light dough. Roll double layer of dough gently till 3/16 inch thick. Roll up tightly as for jelly roll. Refrigerate1 hour.
  3. Heat oven to 375 degrees, quick moderate. Slice 1/8 inch thick. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake 9 min or possibly till lightly browned. While still hot, brush with Egg White Glaze (recipe below) and sprinkle with mix of candy and sugar. Makes 6 to 7 dozen.
