Ingredients
- 2 T shortening
- 1 T sugar
- 1 T salt
- 1 c. boiling water
- 1 pkg. dry yeast
- 1 c. cool water
- 5 1/2 - 6 c. flour
- Egg White Glaze
- 1 egg white
- 2 T water
Directions
- In a large bowl: Put together sugar, salt and boiling water. Add in cold water and cool to 105 degrees. Sprinkle yeast over mix. Let stand 5 min.Gradually beat in 4 cups flour. Add in sufficient of remaining flour to make a stiff dough. Knead till smooth. Place in a well greased bowl. Let rise till doubled (1 - 1 1/2 hrs). Punch down and let rise 30 min more.
- Turn onto lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Shape into a 14-16 inch tube shape. Place on a baking sheet. Let rise till doubled. Cut 1/4 inch slashes in the top. Brush with egg white glaze. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 min. Cool on wire rack.
- If you make this on Saturday, your family will still enjoy it on Sunday if you're lucky to still have some left.
- If your kids watch cartoons on Saturday morning, you can easily make this by yourself. If they do not, they can help you and it will take a little longer.
