,%20which%20will%20publish%20in%20November,%20I%20realized%20I%20would%20need%20to%20test%20the%20ice%20cream%20recipes%20from%20the%20chefs%20contributing%20to%20the%20book.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20could%20no%20longer%20say%20%E2%80%9Cno%E2%80%9D%20to%20the%20Cuisinart%20ice%20cream%20maker%20that%20I%E2%80%99d%20coveted.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20did%20the%20deed%20a%20couple%20weeks%20ago.%20And%20I%E2%80%99ve%20already%20used%20the%20dang%20thing%20three%20times.%20God,%20help%20me.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBecause%20making%20your%20own%20ice%20cream%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20be%20easier.%20You%20just%20stir%20up%20an%20ice%20cream%20base%20of%20some%20sort,%20made%20with%20cream%20or%20milk%20or%20buttermilk,%20and%20egg%20yolks%20or%20not.%20Chill%20it%20overnight%20to%20get%20it%20really%20cold.%20Set%20up%20the%20ice%20cream%20maker,%20the%20bowl%20of%20which%20you%E2%80%99ve%20had%20in%20the%20freezer%20at%20least%2024%20hours.%20Turn%20on%20the%20machine,%20pour%20the%20base%20into%20it%20and%20let%20it%20go%20to%20town.%20Admittedly,%20the%20first%207%20minutes%20are%20like%20watching%20paint%20dry.%20Not%20much%20happens.%20But%20slowly,%20but%20surely,%20the%20mixture%20starts%20to%20thicken%20and%20freeze,%20turning%20into%20scoop-able%20ice%20cream%20that%20you%20can%20stick%20back%20into%20the%20freezer%20to%20firm%20up%20even%20more.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20new%20toy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20she%20is,%20hard%20at%20work.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20this%20is%20optimum%20stone%20fruit%20time,%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20resist%20making%20a%20batch%20of%20%E2%80%9CPeach-Nectarine%20Buttermilk%20Ice%20Cream%E2%80%9D%20from%20%E2%80%9CThe%20Animal%20Farm%20Buttermilk%20Cookbook%E2%80%9D%20(Andrews%20McMeel),%20of%20which%20I%20received%20a%20review%20copy.%20Author%20Diane%20St.%20Clair%20is%20the%20owner%20of%20the%20farm%20that%20supplies%20butter%20to%20the%20French%20Laundry%20in%20Yountville.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20original%20recipe%20calls%20for%20just%20peaches.%20But%20since%20I%20had%20both%20peaches%20and%20nectarines%20at%20home,%20I%20decided%20to%20use%20a%20mix.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20dash%20of%20almond%20extract%20is%20a%20brilliant%20touch%20because%20it%20mimics%20the%20flavor%20of%20a%20peach%20pit,%20heightening%20the%20peach%20flavor%20all%20together.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EButtermilk%20makes%20this%20ice%20cream%20a%20little%20more%20virtuous%20in%20the%20calorie%20department.%20It%20also%20contributes%20a%20refreshing%20tang,%20making%20this%20ice%20cream%20taste%20very%20much%20like%20a%20peach-nectarine%20yogurt%20smoothie.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20a%20perfect%20treat%20for%20this%20time%20of%20year.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20yet%20have%20an%20ice%20cream%20maker,%20far%20be%20it%20from%20me%20to%20tell%20you%20to%20buy%20one.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20I%E2%80%99m%20sure%20glad%20I%20gave%20in.%20Finally.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBring%20a%20large%20pot%20of%20water%20to%20a%20boil.%20Using%20a%20slotted%20spoon,%20dunk%20the%20peaches%20and%20nectarines%20in%20the%20boiling%20water%20until%20the%20skins%20split%20and%20can%20be%20easily%20removed.%20Drop%20them%20in%20a%20bowl%20of%20ice%20water%20and%20slip%20off%20the%20skins.%20Discard%20the%20pit,%20chop%20the%20flesh,%20and%20put%20it%20in%20the%20bowl%20of%20a%20food%20processor%20or%20a%20blender.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%201%20cup%20buttermilk%20and%20pulse%20until%20mostly%20smooth,%20with%20only%20a%20few%20chunks%20of%20peach%20remaining.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETransfer%20the%20pureed%20peaches%20to%20a%20large%20bowl%20and%20add%20the%20remaining%202%20cups%20of%20buttermilk,%20the%20sugar,%20lemon%20juice,%20vanilla,%20and%20almond%20extract.%20Cover%20and%20chill%20in%20the%20refrigerator%20for%20several%20hours,%20until%20very%20cold.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFreeze%20in%20an%20ice-cream%20maker%20according%20to%20the%20manufacturer%E2%80%99s%20instructions.%20Press%20plastic%20wrap%20on%20the%20surface%20of%20any%20leftover%20ice%20cram%20and%20it%20will%20stay%20fresh%20in%20the%20freezer%20for%20a%20week.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdapted%20from%20%E2%80%9CThe%20Animal%20Farm%20Buttermilk%20Cookbook%E2%80%9D%20by%20Diane%20St.%20Clair%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnother%20Recipe%20from%20The%20Animal%20Farm%20Buttermilk%20Cookbook:%20Buttermilk-Coconut%20Blondies%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShare%20and%20Enjoy%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
