Korean Sloppy Joes; Review of Koreatown

Korean Sloppy Joes are fast, easy, delicious and can be served American style on hamburger buns or Bibimbap style, in a rice bowl. I received a copy of Koreatown from Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review. Affiliate links have been used in this post to link to items I am discussing.

,%20I%20could%20treat%20the%20sloppy%20joe%20as%20a%20flavoring%20for%20the%20kids%20and%20serve%20them%20less%20of%20it,%20with%20more%20of%20the%20mild%20components.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20worked%20like%20a%20charm%20with%20Sammy.%20Her%20bowl%20is%20pictured%20directly%20above,%20to%20give%20you%20an%20idea%20of%20how%20much%20sloppy%20joe%20was%20a%20good%20amount%20for%20her%20(there%20is%20a%20pile%20of%20unseen%20rice%20under%20everything).%20She%20adored%20this%20dish%20and%20begged%20to%20have%20it%202%20nights%20in%20a%20row.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlas%20any%20amount%20of%20it%20was%20too%20spicy%20for%20Alex.%20That%20child%20just%20cannot%20handle%20heat.%20The%20second%20night%20she%20had%20everything%20but%20the%20sloppy%20joe,%20with%202%20fried%20eggs%20and%20some%20fish%20sauce.%20Both%20of%20my%20girls%20adore%20anything%20served%20with%20a%20runny%20yolk.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20side%20veggies,%20I%20just%20worked%20with%20what%20I%20had%20around.%20I%20lightly%20pickled%20some%20cucumbers%20and%20apple%20matchsticks,%20saut%C3%A9ed%20some%20mushrooms,%20and%20for%20the%20adults%20added%20cucumber%20kimchi.%20I%20served%20the%20dish%20with%20extra%20gochujang%20but%20nobody%E2%80%93not%20even%20John%E2%80%93needed%20it.%20The%20fact%20that%20I%20turned%20the%20dish%20into%20something%20arguably%20more%20traditionally%20Korean%20made%20me%20laugh,%20because%20Deuki%20Hong%E2%80%99s%20and%20Matt%20Rodbard%E2%80%99s%20Koreatown:%20A%20Cookbook%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eis%20a%20celebration%20of%20the%20rich%20Korean%20food%20culture%20in%20America.%20Including%20its%20kitschy%20incarnations%20like%20Korean%20Sloppy%20Joes%20(from%20the%20Guest%20Recipes%20section%E2%80%93the%20Korean%20Sloppy%20Joes%20were%20created%20by%20Jiyeon%20Lee%20and%20Cody%20Taylor,%20chef-owners%20of%20Heirloom%20Market%20BBQ).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGuys%20I%20love%20this%20book.%20%20I%20have%20at%20least%20half%20the%20recipes%20bookmarked,%20and%20the%20writing%20and%20photography%20is%20engaging%E2%80%93including%20everything%20from%20random%20shots%20of%20Koreatowns%20across%20America%20to%20interviews%20with%20famous%20Korean%20American%20chefs%20like%20David%20Chang.%20The%20recipes%20I%20am%20most%20excited%20to%20make%20after%20the%20Sloppy%20Joes%20include%20Pineapple%20Kimchi%20(be%20still%20my%20beating%20heart!);%20Sweet%20Soy%20Braised%20Chicken;%20Spicy%20Shredded%20Beef%20Stew;%20Beef%20Short%20Rib%20Stew;%20Scallion%20Pancake;%20Bulgogi;%20Spicy%20Pork%20Neck%20and%20Potato%20Stew%E2%80%A6%20I%20could%20keep%20going%20but%20I%20will%20run%20out%20of%20room.%20My%20only%20(tongue%20in%20cheek)%20complaint%20about%20this%20book%20is%20that%20it%20has%20me%20dying%20to%20visit%20restaurants%20all%20across%20America%20in%20cities%20where%20I%20know%20no%20one%20and%20probably%20cannot%20afford%20a%20decent%20hotel%20room,%20let%20alone%20the%20airfare%20to%20get%20there!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKorean%20Sloppy%20Joes%20%20%20Closely%20adapted%20from%20Jiyeon%20Lee%20and%20Cody%20Taylor.%20Note%20that%20this%20recipe%20requires%20time%20for%20marinating%20the%20meat--other%20than%20that%20it%20is%20lightening%20fast!%20These%20can%20be%20served%20on%20a%20bun%20with%20sliced%20pickles%20and%20some%20sort%20of%20kimchi%20on%20the%20side;%20as%20I%20noted%20above,%20I%20chose%20to%20serve%20them%20bibimbap%20style.%20For%20help%20with%20preparing%20the%20veggies,%20check%20out%20my%20previous%20post%20on%20bibimbap.%20%20Ingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20lb%20ground%20beef%20(you%20can%20also%20use%20pork,%20which%20is%20what%20the%20cookbook%20suggests,%20but%20I%20prefer%20beef)%201%20inch%20piece%20of%20ginger,%20minced%206%20garlic%20cloves,%20minced%204-5%20T%20gochujang%20(the%20recipe%20called%20for%205,%20but%20I%20reduced%20it%20a%20bit%20because%20of%20heat)%201%20T%20sesame%20oil%201%20T%20sugar%201%20T%20soy%20sauce%20(I%20used%20Tamari)%20%C2%BD%20t%20freshly%20ground%20black%20pepper%201%20T%20vegetable%20oil%201%20small-medium%20onion,%20chopped%20%20%20Instructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20everything%20together%20except%20the%20oil%20and%20onion.%20When%20everything%20is%20evenly%20mixed%20through%20the%20ground%20meat,%20cover%20the%20bowl%20with%20an%20airtight%20cover%20and%20place%20in%20the%20fridge.%20Marinate%20for%202%20hours,%20or%20preferably%20overnight.%20When%20you%20are%20ready%20to%20make%20the%20sloppy%20joes,%20heat%20a%20large,%20heavy%20skillet%20over%20high%20heat.%20Add%20the%20oil--when%20it%20shimmers,%20add%20the%20chopped%20onion.%20Saut%C3%A9%20for%20about%205%20minutes,%20stirring%20frequently.%20Add%20the%20marinated%20meat%20along%20with%20any%20accumulated%20juices.%20Break%20up%20the%20meat%20and%20stir.%20Cook%20for%206-8%20minutes,%20until%20the%20meat%20is%20evenly%20browned.%20You%20can%20either%20drain%20off%20extra%20fat%20or%20use%20a%20slotted%20spoon%20for%20serving%20the%20sloppy%20joes.%20See%20note%20above%20for%20how%20to%20serve%20the%20sloppy%20joes.%20%203.4.3177%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
