%20guffawing%20out%20loud%20at%20something%20that%20she%20had%20read.%20%20Surely%20nothing%20could%20be%20that%20funny?%20She%20later%20handed%20the%20magazine%20to%20me%20and%20I%20proceeded%20to%20discover%20one%20of%20the%20funniest%20pieces%20I%20had%20ever%20read%20before%20or%20since,%20and%20one%20that%20rapidly%20entered%20our%20family's%20lexicon%20as%20a%20byword%20for%20bad%20menu%20English.%20%20You%20can%20read%20the%20full%20piece%20here%20(and%20I%20encourage%20you%20to%20do%20so),%20but%20the%20basic%20premise%20is%20an%20English%20tourist%20in%20foreign%20climes%20(the%20piece%20says%20Bangkok,%20but%20the%20mangled%20pronounciation%20suggests%20a%20Spanish%20country%20to%20me).%20In%20any%20event,%20the%20man%20calls%20room%20service%20and%20what%20ensues%20is%20a%20hilarious%20phonetic%20rendition%20of%20heavily%20accented%20English%20as%20spoken%20by%20hotel%20employees%20around%20the%20world.%20Highlights%20that%20my%20mom%20and%20I%20kept%20repeating%20over%20the%20years%20like%20some%20secret%20language%20were%20%22Toes!%20Toes!%20Why%20jew%20Don%20Juan%20toes?%22,%20%22crease%20baycome%22%20and%20%22mopping%20we%20bother%22.%20%20So%20began%20one%20of%20our%20family's%20most%20enduring%20set%20of%20in-jokes%20and%20the%20start%20of%20my%20lifelong%20love%20affair%20with%20mangled%20menu%20translations.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBecause%20English%20is%20so%20pervasive,%20every%20man%20and%20his%20dog%20think%20that%20they%20can%20translate%20their%20native%20tongie%20into%20perfectly%20understandable%20English%20-%20but%20as%20hundreds%20of%20hilariously%20garbled%20street%20signs,%20shop%20signs%20and%20menus%20around%20the%20world%20prove,%20this%20is%20simply%20not%20the%20case.%20Here's%20a%20fine%20selection%20from%20hilariously%20mistranslated%20menus%20from%20around%20the%20web:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESteamed%20red%20crap%20with%20ginger%20(don't%20know%20what%20to%20cook?%20%20Any%20old%20crap%20will%20do!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESweat%20and%20sour%20chicken%20(made%20with%20a%20*lot*%20of%20physical%20effort)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHealthy%20demolition%20tofu%20(not%20words%20I%20ever%20thought%20I'd%20see%20in%20the%20same%20sentence...)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChicken%20dumpings%20(eating%20nose%20to%20tail%20-%20and%20beyond...)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESteak%20the%20guest%20(umm,%20is%20that%20the%20time?%20%20I%20really%20must%20be%20going.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGiven%20this%20long%20tradition%20of%20badly%20translated%20menu%20items,%20when%20I%20saw%20the%20above%20menu%20item%20of%20%22Emperor's%20nonsense%20with%20apple%20mush%22%20at%20the%20Munich%20Oktoberfest%20a%20couple%20of%20years%20ago.%20I%20simply%20assumed%20that%20it%20was%20another%20incorrect%20translation.%20%20But%20I%20was%20wrong%20-%20the%20German%20name%20kaiserschmarr'n%20literally%20does%20translate%20as%20emperor's%20nonsense!%20%20Wikipedia%20tells%20us%20that%20the%20dish%20was%20first%20prepared%20for%20the%20Austrian%20Emperor%20Franz%20Josef%20I.%20%20The%20(probably%20apocryphal)%20story%20goes%20that%20the%20emperor's%20wife,%20Elisabeth%20of%20Bavaria,%20was%20obsessed%20with%20maintaining%20a%20minimal%20waistline%20and%20directed%20the%20royal%20chef%20to%20prepare%20only%20light%20desserts%20for%20her.%20%20When%20the%20chef%20first%20presented%20her%20with%20these%20shredded%20pancakes,%20she%20found%20the%20dish%20too%20rich%20and%20refused%20to%20eat%20it.%20The%20exasperated%20Emperor%20said:%20%E2%80%9CNow%20let%20me%20see%20what%20Schmarr'n%20our%20chef%20has%20cooked%20up%E2%80%9D%20-%20but%20apparently%20the%20dish%20met%20his%20approval%20as%20he%20finished%20his%20own%20and%20also%20his%20wife%E2%80%99s%20serving.%20And%20from%20then%20on%20the%20dish%20was%20said%20to%20be%20called%20Kaiserschmarr'n%20across%20the%20empire.%20Today%20it%20remains%20popular%20throughout%20Austria%20and%20Bavaria,%20and%20a%20version%20is%20also%20served%20in%20Czech%20Republic.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20story%20may%20be%20a%20bit%20of%20fun,%20but%20let%20me%20assure%20you%20that%20nothing%20nonsensical%20about%20these%20delicious%20sweet%20shredded%20pancakes!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKAISERSCHMARRN%20(emperor%E2%80%99s%20pancakes)%20Serves%204%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFruit%20compote%20or%20jam%20(to%20serve)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMethod:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20brandy%20over%20the%20raisins%20and%20microwave%20on%20high%20for%2015%20-%2030%20seconds%20and%20let%20them%20soak%20until%20the%20rum%20is%20absorbed%20(about%2020%20minutes).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESeparate%20the%20eggs%20and%20in%20a%20clean%20bowl,%20beat%20egg%20whites%20until%20stiff%20peaks,%20form,%20adding%20a%20pinch%20of%20salt%20towards%20the%20end%20of%20the%20mixing.%20%20In%20a%20separate%20bowl,%20beat%20the%20egg%20yolks%20and%20sugar%20together%20until%20pale%20yellow.%20Add%20milk%20and%20flour,%20a%20little%20at%20a%20time%20to%20avoid%20lumps,%20and%20mix%20well.%20Fold%20in%20egg%20whites.%20Let%20the%20batter%20rest%20for%20about%20ten%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPre-heat%20the%20oven%20to%20180C.%20Warm%20up%20a%20large%20frying%20pan%20(about%2030cm%20in%20diameter%20%E2%80%93%20preferably%20one%20with%20a%20metal%20handle%20or%20a%20skillet,%20so%20it%20can%20go%20into%20the%20oven)%20and%20melt%20the%20butter%20in%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir%20the%20batter%20again,%20then%20pour%20into%20hot%20pan.%20Drain%20and%20sprinkle%20the%20raisins%20evenly%20over%20the%20top.%20Cover%20the%20pan%20and%20let%20the%20pancake%20cook%20for10%20minutes%20over%20medium%20heat.%20When%20the%20edges%20start%20showing%20signs%20of%20turning%20golden%20and%20bubbles%20appear%20on%20top,%20place%20the%20whole%20pan%20on%20the%20middle%20shelf%20in%20the%20pre-heated%20oven%20and%20cook%20for%20a%20further%205-10%20minutes%20until%20just%20set.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETurn%20out%20onto%20a%20plate,%20tear%20apart%20with%202%20forks,%20sprinkle%20with%20sifted%20icing%20sugar%20to%20serve.%20Serve%20with%20preserves%20of%20your%20choice%20%E2%80%93%20apple%20puree%20is%20traditional,%20but%20I%20love%20serving%20it%20with%20chunky%20apricot%20jam.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
