Grandma J's Custard Cream Frosting

Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. lowfat milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 c. whipped cream
  • 1 healthy pinch salt
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 pkg. unflavored gelatin

Directions

  1. In a saucepan combine sugar and lowfat milk and healthy pinch of salt; bring to boil and add in egg yolks. Cook till thick, remove from heat and set aside. In small bowl dissolve gelatin in 1/4 c. cool lowfat milk. Add in this to warm mix and stir to dissolve gelatin completely. Cold completely then add in whipped cream and spread on cake. Garnish with nuts and maraschino cherries or possibly fresh strawberries or possibly raspberries. This frosting is particularly good on angel food cake but also good on other cakes too.
