  • 2 1/2 c. All-purpose Flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 c. Butter, chilled
  • 1 lrg Egg, separated Lowfat milk
  • 1 c. Corn Flakes, crushed
  • 8 x (8 c.) Medium Tart Baking Apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (up to 10)
  • 1 c. Granulated Sugar
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon, divided
  • 1/2 tsp Grnd Nutmeg
  • 1 x Reserved Egg White
  • 2 Tbsp. Granulated Sugar
  • 1 c. Confectioner's Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Tbsp. Lowfat milk, (up to 2)

Everyone loved it!" The Kitchen Staff had much the same reaction when we prepared today's recipe with tart Granny Smith Apples.
  3. Makes About 3 Dozen Bars
  4. Pre-heat oven to 350-F degrees.
  5. In medium-sized mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut small pcs of butter into the dry ingredients till a crumbly mix forms. Separate egg and reserve egg white. Add in sufficient lowfat milk to the yolk to produce 2/3 c. liquid and add in to the pastry mix. Stir into the mix with a fork till dough forms a ball. Divide the pastry dough in half.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll half of dough into a 15-inch by 10-inch rectangle. Place pastry on the bottom of a 15-inch by 10-inch jelly-roll pan. Sprinkle with corn flakes and top with an even layer of sliced apples.
  7. In small mixing bowl, combine 1 c. sugar, 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, and nutmeg. Proportionately sprinkle the mix over apples.
  8. Roll out remaining half of pastry dough into a 15 1/2-inch by 10 1/2-inch rectangle and place over apples.
  9. Beat egg white with fork in a small mixing bowl till foamy. Brush egg white over the top layer of pastry dough.
  10. In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp. sugar and remaining 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and sprinkle over pastry.
  11. Bake for 45 to 60 min or possibly till lightly browned. Remove to cold just slightly before applying glaze.
  12. In small mixing bowl combine confectioner's (powdered) sugar, vanilla, and sufficient lowfat milk for desired glaze consistency. Drizzle over hot bars. Slice to serve.
