German Style Red Cabbage Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 med sz head of red cabbage
  • 1 cup chopped onions
  • 2 TB spoons butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar ~ more to taste
  • 5 TB spoon vinegar ~ I use cider vinegar
  • 4- 5 bay leaves
  • ground cloves ~ to taste, not everyone likes the taste of cloves
  • 3 Apples, peeled and chopped ( they will cook in)
  • optional:
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • strawberry jam ~ to taste

Directions

  1. Saute chopped onion in butter
  2. Add cabbage
  3. Sugar
  4. Vinegar
  5. Salt
  6. Pepper & the rest of the spices
  7. Apples ~
  8. To add sweetness add a good spoonful of strawberry jam .
  9. Simmer for 30 Minutes

    This recipe is almost identical to one I make. Though I've not made this recipe, I know it is very good. And cloves add that special touch! I sometimes use bacon drippings in place of the butter...just another enhancement!

      I've not tried this as yet,but it sounds so goo and wull try it. I AM TRYING TO FIND A RECIPE FOR GERMAN CURRY CHICKEN.YEARS AGO I HAD A RECIPE FROM A GERMAN MAN AND OVER THE YEARS HAVE LOST IT BUT IT WAS GREAT.
