Ingredients
- 2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking pwdr
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/4 pound bar German chocolate
- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1 c. shortening
- 2 c. granulated sugar
- 4 egg yolks, unbeaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 4 egg whites
Directions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 3 (9-inch) layer pans. Stir flour, baking pwdr, baking soda, and salt. Heat chocolate in boiling water and cool. In large bowl with electric mixer mix shortening with sugar till very light. Add in egg yolks, one at a time, beating well. Add in vanilla and melted chocolate; mix to blend.Add in flour mix alternately with butter. Mix in egg whites stiffly beaten. Pour into 3 cake pans. Bake 30-35 min. Test for doneness. Frost with whipped cream. Sometimes I just make a butter frosting for this cake.
