Ingredients

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 c. lard
  • 1 1/2 c. raisins
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp cloves
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 c. warm water
  • 3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 c. cocoa
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 2 tsp baking pwdr
  • 1 tsp salt

Directions

  1. Combine in saucepan sugar, lard, raisins, spices and water. Let come to a boil and boil 3 min. Cold thoroughly. Combine flour, cocoa, baking pwdr, soda and salt; add in to mix. Bake in a 13x9-inch greased and floured pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
  2. Lucile Says: We made this cake a lot while I was growing up on the farm during the Depression. We rendered our own lard, so it was our standard shortening. It didn't need frosting, as it was like an inexpensive fruit cake. It stayed moist for a long time, if you could keep it around for which long.
