Dear Food Diary:
I was shocked when Recipe – one of my favorite brunch spots on the UWS closed last year. Shorty after, Cocina Economica’s sign was up. I wasn’t amused. Why close a great place beloved by so many?
Word in the barrio was that chef/owner David Bank was so impressed with his Sous Chef Pedro’s home-style Mexican meals (cooked for staff) – he wanted to showcase it. Changing everything from name to decor.
Lucky for us, we get to try a really different take on Mexican food.
First time I walked into Cocina Economica, I had to get use to the change, in every single detail. Bank was serious about this.
StalkerBoy and I love his Pure Thai Cookhouse and Land Thai Kitchen, so we knew we were in good hands…

%20%E2%80%93%20he%20wanted%20to%20showcase%20it.%20Changing%20everything%20from%20name%20to%20decor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELucky%20for%20us,%20we%20get%20to%20try%20a%20really%20different%20take%20on%20Mexican%20food.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFirst%20time%20I%20walked%20into%20Cocina%20Economica,%20I%20had%20to%20get%20use%20to%20the%20change,%20in%20every%20single%20detail.%20Bank%20was%20serious%20about%20this.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStalkerBoy%20and%20I%20love%20his%20Pure%20Thai%20Cookhouse%20and%20Land%20Thai%20Kitchen,%20so%20we%20knew%20we%20were%20in%20good%20hands%20flavor%20wise.%20But%20because%20a%20lot%20of%20Mexican%20spots%20serve%20the%20same%20old%20same%20old,%20I%20had%20my%20doubts%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFun%20drinks%20and%20tons%20of%20tequila.%20The%20Hot%20Ponche,%20like%20a%20hot%20cider,%20can%20be%20ordered%20spiked%20with%20tequila%20if%20you%20are%20ready%20to%20fiesta.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBRUNCH%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMost%20times%20you%E2%80%99ll%20find%20me%20there%20over%20brunch,%20but%20we%E2%80%99ve%20also%20had%20lunch%20once%20and%20let%20me%20tell%20you%20%E2%80%93%20fresh%20conch%20in%20their%20Ceviche.%20Si!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAvocado%20Corn%20Bread%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EExactly%20what%20you%20think%20it%20is.%20And%20it%20tastes%20like%20so.%20I%20wanted%20to%20believe%20the%20avocado%20gave%20it%20a%20creamier%20consistency,%20but%20it%20really%20didn%E2%80%99t.%20A%20hint%20of%20flavor%20and%20maybe%20kept%20it%20moist,%20but%20that%20could%20be%20my%20imagination.%20A%20good%20sweet%20starter%20nonetheless.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETacos%20wise,%20I%E2%80%99ve%20tried%20them%20all%20%E2%80%93%20cactus,%20octopus,%20chicken,%20chorizo-longaniza,%20pork%20shoulder,%20beef%20cheek,%20NY%20steak%20(minus%20the%20lamb).%20I%20find%20myself%20coming%20back%20to%20the%20tender,%20smokey%20octopus%20taco%20each%20time.%20At%20$4,%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20appear%20to%20me%20as%20%E2%80%9Cstreet%20snacks%E2%80%9D%20menu%20item,%20but%20the%20simplicity%20of%20good%20components%20%E2%80%93%20perfect%20octopus,%20corn%20tortilla,%20cilantro%20and%20onion%20makes%20me%20forget%20about%20money%20and%20concentrate%20on%20the%20pleasure.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOverall,%20the%20prices%20are%20quite%20fair.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20hot%20sauces%20here%20aren%E2%80%99t%20shy%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20heat.%20But%20it%20also%20adds%20a%20bright%20clean%20pop%20or%20a%20smokey%20layer%20to%20your%20dishes.%20I%20put%20a%20spoonful%20of%20each%20on%20everything%20%E2%80%93%20specially%20poached%20eggs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETheir%20Quesadillas%20are%20also%20fantastico.%20I%20love%20the%20oaxaca%20cheese,%20so%20mozzarella-ey%20but%20with%20even%20more%20pull%20to%20it.%20A%20toothsome,%20milky%20elasticity%20without%20loosing%20that%20oozing%20soft%20cheesy%20appeal.%20The%20crisp%20toasted%20edges%20are%20my%20favorite.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Octopus%20Quesadillas%20is%20another%20winner.%20The%20epazote%20(leafy%20vegetable)%20in%20between,%20hits%20the%20palate%20first%20with%20an%20anise/fennel%20aroma.%20After%20that%20the%20poblano%20chiles%20fills%20your%20mouthful%20with%20just%20the%20right%20amount%20of%20heat%20and%20sweetness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELook%20at%20that%20cheese.%20And%20a%20perfectly%20crispy,%20slightly%20chewy%20homemade%20tortilla%20keeping%20it%20all%20together.%20This%20one%20is%20a%20Beef%20Cheek.%20The%20meat%20has%20just%20the%20right%20amount%20of%20fat%20and%20chard.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20Cactus%20before%20and%20was%20never%20a%20fan.%20Their%20version%20is%20soft%20like%20a%20cross%20between%20cooked%20cucumber,%20aloe%20and%20green%20beans.%20They%E2%80%99ve%20also%20spent%20quality%20time%20on%20the%20grill.%20Making%20the%20whole%20package%20a%20superbly%20smokey,%20cheesy,%20crunchy%20and%20oh%20so%20%E2%80%9CI%20don%E2%80%99t%20miss%20meat%20at%20all%E2%80%9D%20bite.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20favorite%20entree%20is%20this%20Beef%20Cheeks%20Res%20con%20Frijoles.%20It%E2%80%99s%20so%20comforting%20and%20hearty,%20without%20being%20heavy%20or%20salty.%20The%20stew%20also%20has%20beans,%20collard%20greens,%20zucchini,%20radish%20and%20a%20light%20dusting%20of%20cotija%20cheese.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20as%20homestyle%20cooked%20as%20it%20gets.%20And%20thought%20I%E2%80%99ve%20never%20been%20to%20Mexico%20nor%20an%20Mexican%20home,%20that%20feel%20good%20mama%E2%80%99s%20dish%20transcends%20boundaries.%20It%20reminds%20me%20of%20a%20hearty%20Chinese%20soup%20with%20beans.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20usually%20ordered%20it%20with%20either%20poached%20or%20sunny%20side%20up%20eggs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Market%20Vegetable%20comes%20with%20all%20the%20good%20for%20you%20ingredients%20like%20lentils,%20swiss%20chard,%20kale,%20carrots,%20zucchini.%20But%20Pedro%20also%20adds%20some%20jicama%20for%20that%20sweet%20fresh%20crunch.%20The%20surprise%20at%20the%20end%20is%20his%20pipicha%20tomatillo%20salsa%E2%80%99s%20kick.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20also%20good%20Pork%20Enchiladas%20(can%E2%80%99t%20find%20that%20photo,%20sorry).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChorizo%20and%20Cheese%20is%20also%20muy%20bueno.%20I%20could%20lick%20that%20chipotle%20sauce%20off%20the%20mini%20pan.%20There%E2%80%99s%20a%20mix%20of%20poblano%20peppers,%20kale,%20cilantro,%20oaxaca%20cheese.%20Similar%20to%20what%E2%80%99s%20stuffed%20into%20the%20quesadilla%20only%20smothered%20with%20the%20sauce.%20It%20makes%20a%20mess%20when%20I%20break%20the%20yolk,%20but%20ohhhh,%20what%20good%20mess%20it%20is.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESweet%20plantains%20weren%E2%80%99t%20exactly%20swoon%20worthy,%20but%20who%20can%20refuse%20sweet%20plantains%20in%20the%20first%20place.%20If%20you%20can,%20you%20must%20have%20supernatural%20powers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20guacamole%20however%20isn%E2%80%99t%20their%20strong%20sell,%20though%20they%20do%20come%20with%20blue%20chips,%20I%20would%20skip%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDefinitely%20worth%20your%20trek%20to%20the%20UWS.%20Nos%20vemos%20alli.%20Can%E2%80%99t%20wait%20to%20try%20their%20dinner%20menu.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EP.S.%20Chubby%E2%80%99s%20Rating:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecocinaeconomicamexico.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E452%20Amsterdam%20Ave.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E212.501.7755%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
