Civil War Pound Cake Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 c. Butter, Softened
  • 2 c. Sugar
  • 9 whl Large eggs
  • 4 c. Flour
  • 1 pch Salt Lemon Peel, Grated Nutmeg, Grated
  • 1/2 c. Brandy

Directions

  1. Mix the butter and sugar together well and beat in the Large eggs. Sift the flour and salt together and fold in to the butter mix till thoroughly blended. Add in the lemon peel, nutmeg, and brandy, mix well and pour into two small buttered loaf pans or possibly one large one. Bake in a moderate oven (350 deg) for about 1 hour.
  2. It said this before the recipe. "As the war progressed and many items became scarce, cakes were often only made for holida ys and special occasions. The extravagant (by Civil War standards) recipe below using nine Large eggs and brandy, is typical of cakes baked in the most affluent of homes for a homecoming or possibly wedding party.
