Back in the day, California Pizza Kitchen was the place to go for an inventive yet accessible take on pizza with a decidedly breezy California influence.

But over the years, as pizza turned artisan, the choices for truly hand-crafted pies proliferated and greatly overshadowed California Pizza Kitchen’s offerings.

,%20a%20highball%20glass%20of%20Jack%20Daniel%E2%80%99s,%20agave%20nectar,%20Domaine%20de%20Canton%20Ginger%20liqueur,%20fresh%20blueberries,%20lime%20and%20cranberry%20juice.%20Garnished%20prettily%20with%20a%20skewer%20of%20blueberries%20and%20a%20sliver%20of%20candied%20ginger,%20it%E2%80%99s%20quite%20fruity%20and%20refreshing%20with%20the%20warmth%20of%20the%20booze%20hitting%20you%20on%20the%20finish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Blueberry%20Ginger%20Smash.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20half-size%20of%20Harvest%20Kale%20Salad%20($10.99)%20was%20made%20with%20curly,%20rather%20than%20the%20more%20popular%20lacinato,%20kale.%20Toasted%20farro,%20cabbage,%20red%20grapes,%20cranberries,%20Marcona%20almonds,%20goat%20cheese%20and%20the%20surprise%20of%20shaved%20rainbow%20carrots%20gave%20the%20salad%20a%20big%20splash%20of%20color%20and%20texture.%20A%20quite%20sharp%20citrus%20vinaigrette%20added%20punch%20along%20with%20an%20unexpected%20touch%20of%20spiciness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20crusty%20baguette%20with%20olive%20oil%20is%20brought%20to%20the%20table.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKale%20salad.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20the%20%E2%80%9Cseasonally%20inspired%E2%80%9D%20items%20was%20the%20Sunny%20Side%20Up%20Bacon%20&%20Potato%20Pizza%20($15.99)%20that%20tasted%20like%20breakfast%20all%20in%20one%20bite.%20Shaved%20fingerling%20potatoes%20get%20as%20crisp%20as%20potato%20chips%20on%20top%20of%20the%20pizza.%20Nueske%E2%80%99s%20smoked%20bacon,%20caramelized%20leeks,%20parmesan,%20mozzarella%20and%20two%20perfectly%20cooked%20eggs%20with%20oozy%20yolks%20rounded%20out%20the%20toppings.%20The%20crust%20is%20chewy%20like%20bread%20rather%20than%20super%20crisp.%20It%20also%20lacks%20the%20lovely%20fermented%20flavor%20found%20in%20a%20slow-risen%20dough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20pizza%20with%20bacon,%20eggs%20and%20potatoes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHalibut%20with%20farro.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERibeye%20with%20blue%20cheese%20butter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHearth-Roasted%20Halibut%20($22.79)%20features%20wild-caught%20fish%20from%20the%20Aleutian%20Islands.%20Unfortunately,%20it%20arrived%20over-cooked%20and%20dry.%20Cooking%20fish%20in%20an%20oven%20is%20always%20more%20challenging%20because%20it%E2%80%99s%20much%20more%20difficult%20to%20tell%20when%20it%E2%80%99s%20done.%20The%20fish%20came%20on%20a%20bed%20of%20delicious%20farro%20mixed%20with%20chunks%20of%20butternut%20squash,%20which,%20like%20the%20spears%20of%20asparagus%20on%20the%20plate,%20didn%E2%80%99t%20necessarily%20speak%20of%20summer%20if%20the%20restaurant%E2%80%99s%20aim%20is%20to%20be%20more%20seasonal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFire-Grilled%20Ribeye%20($24.99)%20weighs%20in%20at%2012%20ounces.%20Because%20it%E2%80%99s%20Choice%20rather%20than%20Prime,%20it%E2%80%99s%20not%20overly%20marbled.%20I%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20call%20it%20tough,%20but%20you%20definitely%20have%20to%20chew%20it%20more.%20It%20also%20lacked%20a%20little%20seasoning,%20though%20it%20was%20dolloped%20with%20creamy%20blue%20cheese%20butter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoasted%20Garlic%20Chicken%20($18.99)%20had%20plenty%20of%20garlic%20flavor%20and%20a%20tad%20too%20much%20salt.%20The%20flesh%20is%20juicier%20the%20farther%20toward%20the%20center%20you%20go.%20More%20fingerling%20potatoes,%20plus%20cauliflower,%20round%20out%20the%20dish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EButter%20cake%20to%20round%20out%20the%20night.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20dessert%20we%20tried%20was%20the%20only%20item%20that%20night%20we%20ate%20that%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20new.%20In%20fact,%20it%E2%80%99s%20so%20popular,%20it%20never%20leaves%20the%20menu.%20A%20sizable%20round%20of%20butter%20cake%20arrives%20warm,%20which%20makes%20it%20impossible%20to%20resist.%20A%20big%20ball%20of%20vanilla%20ice%20cream%20is%20plopped%20on%20top%20and%20whipped%20cream%20gets%20squirted%20around%20the%20edges%20of%20the%20plate.%20It%E2%80%99s%20as%20buttery%20as%20it%20sounds%20and%20every%20bit%20as%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20applaud%20California%20Pizza%20Kitchen%E2%80%99s%20actions%20to%20offer%20more%20distinctive%20fare.%20With%20some%20fine-tuning,%20the%20new%20dishes%20may%20just%20succeed%20in%20unshackling%20it%20from%20the%20past%20to%20bring%20it%20more%20in%20line%20with%20today%E2%80%99s%20culinary%20zeitgeist.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShare%20and%20Enjoy%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
