Ingredients

  • For the Crisp Topping
  • 1/2 cup unbleached all-purpose (plain) flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned or quick-cooking rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch cubes, + extra for greasing
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, finely chopped
  • For the Apple Filling
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 6 medium, tart apples like Pippin or Granny Smith, peeled, halved, cored, and sliced 1/4 inch thick (about 6 cups or 1 1/2 lbs.)
