,%20but%20I%20was%20upstate%20during%20the%20final%20pickup%20(Week%2022)%20of%20my%20spring-summer-autumn%202009%20CSA%20and%20missed%20out.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20me,%20it%20all%20ended%20with%20the%20following%20leftovers%20from%20the%20previous%20four%20weeks.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWeeks%2018%20and%2019:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20got%20to%20all%20of%20it%20before%20anything%20went%20bad.%20So,%20what%20did%20that%20victory%20taste%20like?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Beets%20with%20Blue%20Cheese%20Sauce%20and%20Spiced%20Walnuts.%20Oh.%20Hello,%20gorgeous.%20You're%20going%20right%20into%20my%20%22Best%20of%20the%20Season%22%20recipe%20list.%20I%20didn't%20roast%20the%20beets%20for%20this%20recipe,%20as%20I'd%20already%20boiled%20some%20beets%20and%20had%20them%20waiting%20to%20be%20eaten%20in%20the%20fridge.%20I%20think%20roasting%20would%20have%20intensified%20the%20flavors%20and%20made%20it%20even%20more%20delicious,%20but%20the%20dish%20was%20still%20excellent.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Raw%20Peppers%20and%20celery%20with%20Hummus.%20The%20difference%20between%20these%20peppers%20and%20store-bought%20peppers%20was%20startling.%20They%20had%20so%20much%20more%20flavor%20and%20snap%20than%20anything%20I've%20gotten%20from%20a%20grocer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Sweet%20Potato%20Buttermilk%20Pie.%20I%20saw%20a%20link%20to%20this%20Lee%20Brothers'%20recipe%20in%20my%20RSS%20reader%20and%20thought%20it%20looked%20%22special%22%20enough%20for%20some%20CSA%20sweet%20potatoes.%20It%20does%20have%20a%20singular%20texture%20that%20is%20more%20like%20cheesecake,%20as%20promised.%20Lemon%20juice%20lends%20a%20surprising%20citrus%20angle%20to%20this%20pie,%20and%20I%20actually%20used%20half%20lemon%20and%20half%20lime%20juice%20(because%20I%20had%20a%20half%20of%20each%20sort%20of%20fruit%20in%20the%20refrigerator%20ready%20to%20go).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20topped%20each%20slice%20with%20a%20little%20unsweetened%20whipped%20cream%20when%20Dan%20and%20I%20ate%20the%20first%20and%20last%20slices%20at%20home,%20but%20it%20also%20traveled%20well%20(to%20Cold%20Spring%20and%20back)%20naked,%20where%20it%20pleased%20both%20sweet-tooth-people%20like%20me%20and%20not-so-sweet-tooth-people%20like%20Rachel.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20pie%20crust%20recipe%20came%20from%20Mark%20Bittman's%20How%20to%20Cook%20Everything.%20I%20made%20his%20version%20sweetened%20with%20a%20little%20sugar%20(as%20the%20pie%20filling%20is%20not%20very%20sweet)%20and%20enriched%20with%20an%20egg%20yolk%20(from%20a%20specially-bought%20CSA%20farm-fresh%20dozen%20eggs).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20soon%20as%20it%20was%20eaten,%20Dan%20asked%20me%20to%20make%20another.%20That%20spells%20success%20as%20far%20as%20I'm%20concerned.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Beet%20Roesti%20with%20Rosemary.%20An%20NPR%20web%20page%20offered%20up%20this%20recipe%20from%20Mark%20Bittman%20and%20Melissa%20Block.%20Easy%20to%20prepare%20and%20fun%20to%20cook,%20the%20beets%20turned%20an%20amazing%20burnt-red%20color%20in%20the%20pan.%20Eating%20it%20was%20an%20odd%20experience,%20though.%20The%20first%20few%20bites%20were%20delicious,%20but%20a%20bitter,%20rich%20flavor%20began%20to%20take%20over%20and%20eventually%20I%20found%20it%20slightly%20nauseating.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDan%20enjoyed%20it%20more%20than%20me,%20but%20agreed%20that%20it%20was%20very%20strong.%20This%20is%20a%20dish%20better%20shared%20with%20a%20large%20group%20than%20eaten%20in%20its%20entirety%20by%20a%20couple.%20I%20also%20think%20it%20would%20have%20benefited%20from%20a%20sour%20cream%20garnish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Kale%20Chips.%20I%20just%20don't%20want%20anything%20else%20anymore.%20They're.%20So.%20Good.%20I%20made%20these%20in%20Cold%20Spring%20(remember%20that%20trip%20upstate%20with%20the%20pie%20I%20just%20mentioned?)%20and%20they%20pleased%20half%20of%20the%20children%20and%20all%20of%20the%20adults%20in%20attendance.%20Young%20Max%20thought%20they%20were%20a%20bit%20peppery,%20and%20he%20was%20right,%20but%20at%20least%20I%20got%20the%20amount%20of%20salt%20right%20on%20this%20batch.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6.%20Final%20Stir%20Fry%20(of%20the%20season,%20not%20of%20my%20life).%20CSA%20Kohlrabi,%20celeriac,%20celery,%20and%20garlic%20with%20non-CSA%20sweet-potato%20(cooked%20chunks),%20mushrooms,%20onion,%20and%20rice.%20I%20used%20the%20scrummy%20lime,%20habanero,%20cilantro,%20and%20mint%20sauce%20from%20David%20Chang's%20awesome%20Brussels%20Sprouts%20recipe%20to%20finish%20the%20dish%20and%20tie%20all%20the%20flavors%20together.%20It%20was%20missing%20only%20peanuts.%20Mental%20note:%20buy%20peanuts!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh,%20sad.%20It's%20over.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell,%20for%20my%20compatriots%20who%20did%20pick%20up%20Week%2022's%20vegetables,%20I%20do%20want%20to%20offer%20the%20following%20links%20to%20recipes%20I%20would%20have%20liked%20to%20have%20tried%20with%20the%20final%20week's%20share:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1lb%20beets%20-%20Roasted%20Beet%20Risotto%20(use%20the%20greens,%20too,%20if%20you%20have%20them).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3%20turnips%20-%20Baked%20Turnip%20and%20Sauerkraut%20Casserole%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3%20radish%20-%20Radish,%20Mint,%20and%20Feta%20Salad.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1lb%20greens%20-%20If%20it%20was%20kale%20--%20and%20I%20always%20hope%20it's%20kale%20now%20--%20I'd%20make%20more%20Kale%20Chips!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1lb%20carrots%20-%20Carrot%20and%20Lots%20of%20Garlic%20Soup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2%20garlic%20-%20[see%20soup,%20above]%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1lb%20onions%20-I'd%20Caramelize%20them%20to%20eat%20on%20just%20about%20anything!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHappy%20seasonal%20eating,%20everyone.%20And%20thank%20you%20so%20much%20to%20Rachel%20T.%20and%20the%20staff%20and%20volunteers%20at%20Judson%20who%20made%20the%20CSA%20program%20run%20so%20well%20on%20their%20(and%20my)%20first%20try,%20offered%20recipes,%20and%20were%20friendly%20faces%20at%20pickup.%20I've%20really%20enjoyed%20myself%20and%20I%20can't%20think%20of%20anyone%20I'd%20rather%20have%20had%20handling%20my%20veg.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you've%20enjoyed%20reading%20these%20CSA%20posts%20and%20would%20like%20me%20to%20continue%20posting%20in%20this%20same%20vein,%20please%20let%20me%20know.%20It%20might%20give%20me%20the%20encouragement%20I%20need%20to%20do%20a%20winter%20share.%20And%20of%20course,%20I%20hope%20you'll%20hang%20around%20for%20the%20snacking%20and%20baking%20(hello,%20Cookie%20Party%20prep!)%20that%20is%20to%20come.%20Also,%20I'll%20be%20posting%20soon%20with%20a%20list%20of%20my%20absolute%20favorite%20new%20recipes%20from%20this%20long%20adventure.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOtherwise,%20see%20you%20next%20spring!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
