Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Sauce:
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  4. Add onions and garlic; cook until tender.
  5. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Add milk all at once.
  6. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.
  7. Stir in ham. Remove from the heat.
  8. Place half of the sliced potatoes in a greased 1 1/2 quart baking dish.
  9. Top with half of the sauce. Sprinkle with smoked gouda and cheddar cheese.
  10. Add remaining sliced potatoes and remaining sauce.
  11. Cover dish with foil. Bake for 35 minutes.
  12. Uncover and bake for 30-35 minutes more or until potatoes are tender and golden.
  13. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese. Bake, uncovered, about 5 minutes more or until cheese is golden. Let stand for 15 minutes before serving. Yield: serves 6
